The best-known credit scores are going to fall under either the FICO or VantageScore brands. There are multiple generations of each score brand, as every few years, the score developers create newer versions. So, for example, theres a VantageScore 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0.
In most lending environments outside of mortgages, its hard to know which specific credit score a lender will use to evaluate your application. And, even if you knew your lender used a FICO Score or a VantageScore credit score, you still would not know which generation of the score it is using.
For example, you may apply for an auto loan with one lender that checks your FICO Auto Score 8 based on your Experian credit report. Yet, if you apply for financing with a different auto lender, it may opt to check your VantageScore 3.0 score based on TransUnion data.
The only way to know for sure is to ask the lender which credit report and which credit score version it plans to check, but that isnt a guarantee that theyll tell you.
The mortgage industry is different. Because of the aforementioned FHFA mandate, mortgage lenders must use the following versions of FICOs scoring models:
- Experian: FICO Score 2, sometimes referred to as FICO V2 or FICO-II
- TransUnion: FICO Score 4, sometimes referred to as FICO Classic 04
- Equifax: FICO Score 5, sometimes referred to as BEACON 5.0

There are five different FICO score models currently used by most lenders of all types. The vast majority of mortgage lenders use the same ones: FICO Score 2, 4 and 5. These are the models used by the credit bureaus Experian, TransUnion and Equifax respectively. Theyre called FICO mortgage scores.

What Credit Scores Do Car Lenders Use
Although you might not know exactly which credit score an auto lender will use, the following types of credit scores are popular options:
FICO® Score 8 and 9. These are the latest generic FICO® scoring models. Although FICO® didn’t create these models specifically for auto lenders, they are widely used credit scores, and auto lenders may use a base FICO® Score when reviewing auto loan applications.
FICO® Auto Scores. There are multiple versions of the industry-specific FICO® Auto Score, which is created specifically for auto lenders. The FICO® Auto Scores are based on a generic FICO® Score, and then the score is altered to better predict a person’s likelihood of repaying an auto loan on time. Your history with auto loans could be especially important in determining your FICO® Auto Scores.
VantageScore® 3.0 and 4.0. These are the two latest versions of the credit scoring model created by VantageScore, a credit scoring agency founded by the three major credit bureaus . According to a 2017 report from VantageScore Solutions and financial consulting firm Oliver Wyman, auto lenders used a VantageScore credit score for more than 70% of new auto loan and lease decisions from July 2016 to June 2017.

How Do I Get My True Fico Score For Free
The first place you should check for your free FICO Score is with your credit card issuer. Many card issuers provide their cardholders with free access to their credit score. While there’s a good chance you’ll have access to your credit score, the key is whether it’s your FICO Score or VantageScore.
Why Are Credit Scores Lower For Fha Loans
If you have a low credit score, your loan officer or online preapproval process may direct you to an FHA loan.
FHA loans are so named because the Federal Housing Administration, or FHA, insures them. With government insurance protecting these loans, lenders can offer competitive interest rates even if your score wouldnt qualify you for a conventional mortgage.
FHA insurance helps borrowers with lower credit scores get loans with lower mortgage rates and low down payment requirements. But this flexibility costs money. Your loan would require an upfront mortgage insurance premium of 1.75% of the loan amount. Thats $4,375 if youre getting a $250,000 home loan.
Youll also pay an annual MIP which typically costs 0.85% of the loan balance each year. Later, once youve paid down the balance enough, you could refinance into a conventional mortgage to eliminate these extra premiums.
Conventional or conforming mortgages loans that follow rules set by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will need private mortgage insurance unless youre making a down payment of 20% or more.
But with conventional loans you can stop paying PMI once youve paid off 20% of the loan amount.

Why Are There Different Fico Scores
When you apply for credit, whether its your first credit card or a second mortgage, lenders need to decide whether youre enough and likely to repay the money. To do this they check your credit scores or get credit reports from one or more of the major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Each has its own credit score that is developed by FICO, and these scores are calculated based on your credit history and other information that goes into your credit report.
There are also multiple versions of FICO scores, reflecting the evolution of the credit market and consumer behavior since the scores first became a tool for lenders back in 1989. Just in terms of the amount of credit we use, theres been a big increase over the past few decades, with consumer borrowing rising by approximately 15% over the last four years. A typical borrower today probably would have been considered a higher credit risk under older methods of calculating credit scores.
FICO has rolled out 10 versions of its base score over the years, and most of them are still in use by lenders to some extent. Lenders can choose from the following base versions:
- FICO 10 and 10T
The FICO 10 Suite, which lenders could access as of 2020, introduced more flexibility and predictability into the scoring model to help lenders avoid the risk of defaults by borrowers. A number of lenders have switched to FICO 9, which is more forgiving of unpaid medical bills, but FICO 8 remains the most widely used.
How Much Deposit Do I Need To Get A Mortgage With A Poor Credit Score
It may be the case that to access your chosen lenders rates and meet their terms, you have to deposit a higher percentage of the properties market value. That being said, the amount of deposit you need to get a mortgage will vary depending on a whole host of factors including your age and the type of property you want to buy.
There isnt a typical deposit size, but some lenders ask applicants to deposit as much as 30% for a mortgage if they have a poor credit score or low affordability.
For a home valued at £200,000 that would equate to a £60,000 deposit. Large deposits arent a viable option for a lot of borrowers and thankfully there are a handful of lenders that appreciate this and may be more willing to lend under more flexible terms.
